On Pausing (Bits from the December Newsletter)

In the whirlwind of our daily lives, it’s easy to forget the importance of pausing—a moment to exhale, to sip, to simply be. This year, I’ve been exploring how small rituals, like brewing a cup of tea or getting lost in a good book, can anchor us amidst the chaos. In the December Newsletter I shared some of the lessons I’ve learned about the power of stillness, along with a few of my favorite tea recipes and the books that have inspired me so far in 2024.

I’m posting below the list of favourites, so whether you’re looking for a moment of calm or a fresh read to add to your list, I hope you’ll find something here to savor.

Chiajna din Casa Musatinilor, written by Simona Antonescu. Favourite author, favourite writing, story, history lesson, Romanian traditions and pieces of myth and legend tightly woven into history.

Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Library, written by Hwang Bo-Reum. If I think about healing books, this one takes the first prize. In awe!

The Island of Sea Women and Lady Tan’s Circle of Women, both by Lisa See. Such powerful stories, such powerful characters and the pieces of history trapped in them… no words!

The Mountains Sing, written by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai. Another piece of history uncovered this year. Such beautiful and elegant prose and such heartbreaking/heartwarming story!

Firekeeper’s Daughter, written by Angeline Boulley. In this book I found some stories of people I did not know until now, and I loved it.

The Secret Book of Flora Lee, written by Patti Callahan Henry was one of the last books I read, and it kept me intrigued and glued to the pages until the end.

In January I have a Reading log for you to use in the 2025, and I’ll be giving out my favourite comfort food recipe, so easy and so tasty that it will go well with the stack of books you just bought/received for Christmas.

Also, an update on the third book form the Whispers of the Graces series is coming and some input on the cover I am still debating on.

Last but not least… may or may not be a proposal in there…
